SAORI WEAVING

The "SA" of SAORI means that "everything has its own individual dignity."  The "ORI" means weaving.

"All flowers are beautiful, even though each is different in form and color. Because of these differences, all are good. Because everything has its own life, life cannot be measured by a yardstick. It is this individuality that makes everything meaningful; it is the uniqueness of each thread that creates the tapestry of life."

With these thoughts Misao Jo (Japan, 1960's) started a creative artistic movement that now reaches around the globe. Insisting upon the importance of breaking with conventional, patterned thinking, which values uniformity and evenness, she brought weavers to express their own sensitivity and uniqueness through innovation and self-discovery. She taught:

"We do not make an imitation, but rather a new creation....We do not weave a piece of cloth, but rather our true selves."

Embracing Saori weaving, I have expanded my fiber expression (from traditional patterns of early Americana - patterned wool/linen coverlets) to embrace her philosophy and include new works that are endlessly invigorating and fun to create. Thank you, Misao Jo!
